Mission Statement

The mission of the Bronson Public Library is to provide materials and services for community residents of all ages for personal enrichment, enjoyment and educational needs. The library is dedicated to providing practical access to all forms of resources. We especially recognize our responsibility to serve as a place for children to discover the joy of reading and innovated learning.

The Bronson Public Library will maintain a pleasant environment in an atmosphere of helpfulness and provide library service in conformity with the Library Bill of Rights as adopted by the Council of the American Library Association.

Library Policies

Bronson Public Library issues patron cards to citizens of Bronson and surrounding areas. Books check out for two weeks, and videos/DVDs check out for one week.

Internet computers are available, and patrons must agree to our internet use policy prior to use. Minors require written parental consent.

The Bronson Public Library consists of five members, which meet monthly at the library.

History

The OES (Order of Eastern Star) Club started the Bronson Library in 1935 with their own books and donations. The original library was located inside the Wright-Ireland Store located on the 500 block of Clay street. The club members took turns volunteering. The first paid librarian was Bertha Meyers who received 25 cents a day, for each day she worked.

Eventually, the library became the Bronson Public Library joining the Southeast Kansas Library System receiving funding through tax revenue and the SEK Library System. In 1965 the library was moved to 411 Clay and shared the space with the City of Bronson. Through the aid of a Community Development Block Grant, a new library/community center for the City of Bronson was completed the spring of 2004 located at the present day site at 509 Clay Street. The dedication ceremony was held on Bronson Day, May 29, 2004.

The library has evolved over the years to incorporate not only an extensive book selection, but also microfilm, media, computerized technology, and innovative and educational programs and resources. In 2009, through the SEK Library System, the library incorporated an automated catalog system, SEKnFind, which enables patrons to utilize resources online and share materials from other libraries throughout the system.
